Doing Gaisce – The President’s Award
Gaisce – The President’s Award is one of Ireland’s most prestigious youth awards and is a direct challenge from the President of Ireland to young people aged between 15 and 25 years. Established in Ireland in 1985, Gaisce’s mission is to provide opportunities for young people to realise their potential through personal challenges, facilitating the transition from young person to young adult and enhancing their potential and contribution as active participants in society.
The outcomes of Gaisce – The President’s Award complement the outcomes of the Journey Programme of the Irish Girl Guides. A partnership was developed between the two organisations to ensure a process that allows our members to complete their Gaisce Award while also completing their Senior Branch Journey Programme.
There are three levels of awards within the Gaisce Award system; Bronze, Silver and Gold. These link with the overall Senior Branch Awards of Bronze Star, Silver Moon and Golden Sun respectively. Once a Senior Branch member has completed her overall Senior Branch Award, she will also have completed the corresponding Gaisce Award. If a Senior Branch member has completed her Gaisce Award outside of Guiding, she will be recognised for any Gaisce components already completed.
IGG supports young people doing their Gaisce Awards outside of Guiding and will provide an opportunity to fulfil this part of the progamme where possible. Please contact your local Leaders or National Office if you want to volunteer with Irish Girl Guides as part of your Community Involvement challenge.
