LADYBIRDS

Ladybirds Age Range: 5-7 years

“I will try to do my best, to love my God* and help other people.”

*The word “God” can be replaced by the word “faith” according to one’s spiritual beliefs.

When a Ladybird makes her Promise she holds up the two fingers beside her thumb on her right hand. This represents the two parts to their Promise “to love my God*” and “to help other people.”

“Ladybird Guides care and share”.

Ladybirds may use the left handshake, in common with all members of the Guide and Scout movements worldwide.

A Ladybird wears a red sweatshirt and/or polo shirt with the IGG logo, a navy neckerchief with black woggle, a navy badge sash, and navy tracksuit bottoms or skirt.

The programme of the Ladybirds

The initial stage of the programme when a girl joins Ladybirds is that she prepares to make her Promise. She learns details about herself including her name, birthday and parents’ telephone numbers. She learns about Ladybirds including the Song, Story, Promise and Sign. She also begins to wear her uniform. Once she has completed these tasks, and has been attending meetings for a minimum of eight weeks, she is enrolled as a Ladybird and will receive her first badge – her Promise Pin.

The girls follow a three-year programme designed to be progressive so that each girl learns about herself and the world around her. Ladybirds are superheroes, gaining powers as they collect their annual Discover, Grow and Fly Journey badges which are used to develop their rainbow-coloured superhero capes. Games, activities and badges aim to develop positive self-image, introduce Guiding values, and teach girls how to play and work well with others.

Each Ladybird will have the opportunity to earn a number of Interest Badges during her time in Ladybirds. These badges show that a girl has developed a skill, knowledge and/or interest in a particular area.
