Have you ever heard of Fairtrade? Do you want to teach your girls about the rights of women across the world? Do you want to know how to explain that some girls in the world can’t play or go to school the same way they can? Even if you have never heard of Development Education before, you can complete the Irish Girl Guides Development Education badge with your unit.
So what is Development Education? In short, Dev Ed encourages us to consider the world through the eyes and ears of others. Some topics which you will come across include poverty, equality, environment, democracy and human rights. They might sound like heavy issues but we’ve made it fun and inspiring. Not only can you read about and research Dev Ed issues but playing games means the girls and Leaders will be better able to understand the issues in a relaxed and fun way.
The Irish Girl Guides has produced a badge and syllabus for Ladybirds, Brownies and Guides. The syllabus is available from National Office or you can download your copy further down this page. The topics covered across the three books are:
Ladybirds are asked to complete one activity from four of the sections. Brownies and Guides are asked to complete one activity from five of the sections. The badge and syllabus is not compulsory however the units who have tried it so far have really enjoyed it. Download it below:

There are plenty more resources out there that you can use so when the syllabus is complete, you can still use the topic of Dev Ed in a fun way. These activities will often feature in the pages of Trefoil News and on this section of the website.
Traidcraftschools is a great resource and they have a special page for Guide and Scout groups, with ideas on Fair Trade activities
