CAMP 101 was the International Girl Guide Camp that took place in Lough Key Forest Park, Co Roscommon from 4th – 11th July 2012 with Guides from around the world in attendance. It was run by the Camp Management Team led by the Camp Chief and 2 Assistant Camp Chiefs who volunteered their time and energy to ensure CAMP 101 was a success.
Worldwide, Girl Guiding is focused on the Global Action Theme “Together We Can Change Our World” which encourages girls and young women to change the world around them. The Irish camp adopted this as its theme and through the week long activities, campers learned about the positive changes they can make in their own communities and beyond. The “Discover Our World” sessions linked the campers via Skype with girls in developing countries, such as Kenya, to learn more about each other’s lives and cultural differences.
The Guides had a host of other great activities to choose from, including outdoor survival skills, canoeing, night survival, drama, radio skills, how to make videos for YouTube, pioneering, orienteering and much more. Great use was also made of Lough Key’s fabulous amenities such as the Boda Borg and Zip It, adding even more adventure and excitement to the week. The girls also learned about giving back to their communities and visited the local nursing home in Boyle and painted a mural for the Community Hall in Boyle.
Camp ended on 11th of July with the closing ceremony the night before. The girls left camp with new friends from around Ireland and around the world, lots of camping experiences, and are already looking forward to the next Irish Girl Guides camp.
